How to Unzip .zip file

If you downloaded my theme files from Etsy, you will receive a file with .zip extension. You have to extract this .zip file first before uploading it to your WordPress.

Unzipping .zip file with Windows PC

  1. Open File Explorer and find the compressed folder (the .zip file).
  2. To unzip, Double-click the ZIP file. File Explorer will show you the file’s contents. At this point, you can either open all the files contained by selecting Extract All in the top-right corner of File Explorer, or you can select individual files and open them one at a time by dragging them to a new location. Selecting Extract All in File Explorer prompts an option window that allows you to set the destination for the extracted files. The default destination is always the current location of the ZIP file. OR another way to unzip: Right-click the ZIP file. Then select Extract All from the drop menu.

Unzipping .zip file with Mac OS

  1. Locate your download file.
  2. Double-click on the zip file to unzip it
  3. You should now be able to see your unzipped file, example :

Stop Your Browser from Unzipping the File (Safari – Mac)

Sometimes Safari automatically extracts the downloaded .zip file, which prevents you from uploading the theme to WordPress. You need the file to stay as a .zip.

Fix it in 10 seconds:

  1. Open Safari
  2. Click Safari (top-left menu bar)
  3. Select Settings / Preferences
  4. Go to the General tab
  5. Uncheck:
    “Open ‘safe’ files after downloading”

Now download the theme again — it should stay as a .zip file and you can upload it normally.

Windows — Do NOT Extract the Theme File

If you see a folder after downloading, the theme was extracted. WordPress cannot upload folders — it only accepts a .zip file.

Please follow these steps:

  1. Download the theme file
  2. Open your Downloads folder
  3. Find the file ending with .zip (example: themename.zip)
  4. Do not double-click the file
  5. Go to WordPress → Appearance → Themes → Add New → Upload Theme
  6. Upload the .zip file directly

If you already opened it and now only see a folder:

  • Delete the folder
  • Re-download the file
  • Upload the .zip file without opening it

Important:
Uploading the extracted folder will always fail or the file will appear greyed out.
